Local Rescue Feature – New Hope Dog Rescue

New Hope Dog Rescue is a volunteer-run Registered Charity based in Saskatoon and was established in 2003. Though they are based in Saskatoon they have volunteers, foster homes, partner vets, as well as partner organizations and communities throughout north central Saskatchewan.

Types of Animals they work with: Dogs

Their Mission is to provide every dog in our care a safe, foster-based environment, while promoting the human-animal bond through outreach and educational initiatives.

Their Objectives include:

  • Reduce and resolve dog overpopulation in Saskatchewan
  • Provide safe foster-based environment to rescued dogs
  • Increase pet retention through behavior training, spay/neuter First Nations program, animal safekeeping program
  • Provide necessary medical care
  • Educate the public

If you would like to volunteer with New Hope Dog Rescue you can help by:

  • Take foster dogs out to community organizations to visit with residents and staff

New Hope Dog Rescue has helped more than 4300 dogs find new homes in the past 21 years. They firmly believe in the importance of the human-animal bond. With this in mind they partner with two Saskatchewan First Nation Communities to provide spay/neuter and basic veterinary care to owned dogs in the community so they can stay with their families. They also have two animal safekeeping programs with the core belief that they can help people and their dogs be reunited after going through a difficult situation. Through these 3 programs New Hope has helped more than 150 dogs be reunited with their families.

New Hope Dog Rescue is always looking for volunteers to help foster animals as there is no short supply in animals in need.

To become a Foster with New Hope Dog Rescue you can be located anywhere in Saskatchewan provided you are able to bring the foster to a partner vet and into Saskatoon for adoption events.

Becoming a Foster includes:

  • Being prepared that this is a commitment that you are making to this dog for the time that it is in your care.
  • Be prepared for shedding and nose prints in your home.
  • Ensure that the dogs are exercised, fed, and watered, and are provided enrichment activities.
  • Provide positive reinforcement to teach behaviours that will make living with their foster enjoyable.
  • Advocating for the dog(s) in your care.
  • Provide updates to the Executive Director and foster supports about your foster and your foster needs.
  • Be able to get the dog to veterinary appointments and adoption events.
  • Be communicators.
  • Be prepared that a dog could be with you for 2 weeks or many months depending on what kind of dog people are looking to adopt.
  • Write the bio to help the dog get adopted, then call and meet with potential adopters and sharing ALL of the information on your foster dog, this includes the less then ideal things that this dog does

New Hope Dog Rescue relies on donations to help rescue and care for animals in need. They are ALWAYS in need of:

  • Dog Food
  • Pumpkin – powdered or canned
  • Pee pads
  • Cleaning supplies
  • Sturdy toys for chewers (kongs)
  • Food puzzles for enrichment
  • Donations towards vet bills
