Local Rescue Feature – Saskatoon SPCA

The roots of the Saskatoon SPCA start back in the 1920s leading to the eventual independence of the organization in 1968 as the Saskatoon Society for Prevention of Cruelty to Animals. They are a Registered Charity and depend on donations and volunteers to help support the organization.

Types of Animals they work with: Dogs, Cats, Rabbits, Caged Birds & Other Small Animals

Their Vision is to be a leader in animal welfare, working for a compassionate society where all animals are respected and valued.

They lost the city pound contract in 2023 which led them to relocate to their new state-of-the-art facility on Hanselman Ave in Saskatoon, opening January 2024. Along with being able to adopt a pet from the Saskatoon SPCA they also provide Training Classes and Behavioral Counselling to help dogs waiting adoption, recently adopted or those already in a home that need help with basic training or other behavioral issues.

If you would like to volunteer with the Saskatoon SPCA you can do so by helping with:

  • Administrative Tasks – assist with various office tasks
  • Animal Care – daily care for animals and/or fostering
  • Communications & Media – help create content for social media, newsletters, and other various outlets.
  • Events – plan, organize, assist, and execute shelter events
  • Grooming – perform grooming tasks such as bathing, brushing, and trimming nails and/or hair
  • Operations – support the day-to-day functioning of the shelter
  • Training Support – help with the training and socialization of animals
  • Transportation – provide transport for animals to and from the shelter
  • Yard & Maintenance – maintain the shelter’s outdoor areas

The Saskatoon SPCA is always looking for volunteers to help foster animals as there is no short supply of animals in need and some animals thrive better in a home environment. Fosters must be at least 18 years old, be located within a reasonable distance of the shelter and prepared to travel for animal pick-up, routine appointments, supply refills, and potential emergencies. You can learn more about becoming Foster on their website.

The Saskatoon SPCA relies on donations to help rescue and care for animals in need. They are ALWAYS in need of:

  • Monetary Donations
  • Kibble (Kitten, Puppy & All Life Stages)
  • Wet Cat Food
  • Kitten & Puppy Milk Replacer
  • Bedding & Blankets (no stuffing ie/ quilts, comforters)
  • Cleaning Supplies (disinfectants, laundry detergent, paper towels, and other cleaning products)
